The AFS Hutton Jr. Fisheries Biology Program is looking for mentors in the Highlands NJ, Baltimore MD, and Lexington NC areas. If you can assist, it’s a great program and great opportunity to help mentor the next generation of diverse fisheries scientists!
What is the Hutton Program? The AFS Hutton Jr. Fisheries Biology Program is a competitive scholarship program for high school students to learn about fisheries science professions through paid summer internships. The goal of the program is “to recruit high school students from traditionally excluded backgrounds…in the fisheries profession today and introduce them to the field of fisheries science and aquatic resource management”. Selected students are matched and mentored by fisheries professionals in their local areas to enjoy hands-on experience through paid internships.
Since 2001, the program has mentored 727 scholars at 234 institutions, and 72% of alumni attribute their internship to increasing their interest in fisheries, aquatics, or environmental science studies and careers. You can learn more about being a mentor here.
And for students or parents who want to learn more about these opportunities or others who wish to learn more or support, you can check out the program at their website here.
